From Cozumel - And Mexico - With Love: Hundreds Ready For IM Texas

Over two hundred and fifty Ironman athletes representing Mexico will be on hand Saturday, May 21 for the inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas.
They will make up nine percent of the current 2,793-participant field.
Somewhat surprisingly, Americans were still the most populous of the second annual Ironman Cozumel field last November when 969 were on the start list and just 494 representing Mexico.
And over 100 who were in the water to start Ironman Cozumel -- 94 finishers and nine DNFs -- have plans to navigate Lake Woodlands and the Waterway in just under four months.
Thirty-six of those 94 finishers were from Mexico.
One person not on the participant list that is currently posted at the official Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas website, but will be racing, is The Woodlands' T.J. Fry, who finished Ironman Cozumel in 10:12:55.
Five other hometown residents - set for May's event - made the trip and finished in Cozumel.  They included Jesse Robinson, Raul Luzardo, Ana Lemus, Sheri OKeefe and Amy Barr.
Ironman Cozumel had a higher than normal attrition rate, but a slightly normal DNF rate.
Of the 2,326 that were registered, 560 never made it to the start line - 24.1%.
And of the 1,766 who did, 1,643 finished - a 93% finishing rate.

Fifteen (15) Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas hopefuls - nine men and six women - competed at Sunday's USA Fit Marathon and Half Marathon in Sugar Land, Texas under cool, wet and, at times, blustery conditions.
Seven finished the marathon, including Sugar Land's Adrian Arroyos, 37, and Maggie Kattan, 39, who ran together as Kattan finished 11th overall among all women. The duo will be two of the 12 who will be looking for their first Ironman finish in May.

First 10 Pros Identified Coming to IM Texas - The US Pro Ironman Championship?

Eight of the 2,793 triathletes on the latest participant list for this May's inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas have been identified as professional triathletes.
The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owner of the Ironman brand, updated the ironmantexas.com website on Monday, January 10.
Five women and three men were on the list and an additional pair through Internet searches have been identified as coming to The Woodlands this spring.
Boulder, Colorado and Austin, Texas' Michael Lovato and Portugal's Pedro Gomes have listed Ironman Texas on their 2011 schedules and Lovato went as far as to comment on his blog that it is one of first half "of the season" priorities.

     The five women were:
+  Belgium's Tine Deckers, who won Ironman France last summer in 9:21:29 and was third at Ironman South Africa last January in 9:29:58,
+  Montana's Linsey Corbin, who is competing this weekend at Ironman 70.3 Pucon in Chile,
+  The Netherlands' Mirjam Weerd, who finished third at Ironman Wisconsin last September,
+  Japan's Emi Shiono, who has has been to Kona the last six years,
+  Switzerland's Sarah Schuetz, who finished in 10:34:51 at Ironman Lanzarote last May.

     The three men included:
+  New Zealand's Luke McKenzie, a 5-time Ironman champion whose last win was at Ironman China in March '10 in 8:41:15,
+  France's Romain Guillaume, who finished fifth at Ironman France in 8:58:56 and second in 8:49:52 at Ironman Wisconsin last year,
+  Germany's Daniel Schmoll, who was 8th at Ironman Regensburg in Germany last summer in 8:49:34.

The biggest surprise came, though, from McKenzie's schedule on his website (see image below) as he identified what has been widely rumored, but not officially announced - that the inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas would be the United States Pro Ironman Championship.

In December of last year, it was announced that the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 70.3, to be held in Galveston in early April, would once again be the site of the U.S. Pro 70.3 Championship.

Austin's Shelden Finishes 8th at Lake Wanaka Half (New Zealand)

Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas competitor Brian Shelden, 40, of Austin, who went 9:35:54 at Kona and earned a trip for '11 at November's Ironman Florida in 9:21:23, finished 8th earlier today - January 15, 2011 - in New Zealand at the Lake Wanaka Half (part of the Challenge race series) in 4:46:30.
